Windows 7 - Getting Ready For Your Games! « Thread Started on Oct 5, 2009, 4:00pm »
Lo, chaps!
I've been looking into setting up a dual booting scenario with XP and Windows 7.
As you guys know I can't get Punkbuster and BF1942/Vietnam to work on Windows 7 RTM.
Because of this I can't prove I won't be getting "BF1942.EXE STOPPED WORKING" error, and personally I reckon we will never get rid of this for both Vista and Windows 7...so not good news there anyway.
HOWEVER!!
As I said I've been looking into dual booting Windows 7 with XP. Anyway I now know how to solve all our problems
One disk for Windows 7 the other for XP When you turn your machine on when setup you'll be able to pick which OS to run
So if I wanna play BF1942/Vietnam without probs I just boot into the XP OS.
You can do the partition root which is more common, but I now know how to boot off 2 disks
1 Disk for XP 1 Disk for Windows 7
Happy Daze, bring on October 22nd!!
OH AND...
If you think Windows XP Mode (built into Window 7 pro/ultimate) is a solution to your problems, then forget about it. Essentially Window XP Mode is a Virtual Machine, so its no good for games.
The only good thing about XP Mode is when you install apps on it, it creates Shortcuts in your Windows 7 Start menu.
SO GOOD NEWS BEVY
I'll set yours up like mine once I've got mine working tried and tested.

BTW, this is not to say Windows 7 isn't good, because it is, esp if you're currently running Blister...pile of dog poo that it is.
Windows 7 is much faster, no disk thrash also which is a bonus if you want to preserve the lifetime of your HDDs
Windows 7 also now has Direct 2D in it, whereas before Vista had a conbination of half arsed D2D and GDI+ for its interface, hence it was slow and cumbersome. Essentially what this means is the interface is loads faster, and it doesn't have to load both graphics libs into memory wasting memory, disk, caching etc.
Talking of caching, W7 is loads better @ caching as well. Vista just tried to load everything from the off hence your disk would take 10+ mins to calm down.
Indexing on it is better and faster, less intensive.
Oh and there is a new option in Windows 7, called "get yer lad out" Essentially it takes your avitar and puts your head on John Holmes so yer look like yer've got a 15 inch lad.
