I always used to wonder with the 20K that was left in the computer to run Elite on the Beeb, how the hell did they manage to fit content on 8 galactic maps each with 256 stars in them.

Then on reading I found out they (Braben & Bell) used the Fibonacci Sequence to generate the content.
