The question of whether Benitez remains at the club is becoming an obsession; every interview with current players, every analysis of a game, every sports section of the newspapers asks the same question they have been asking for at least two seasons. That's at least two seasons that the team have had to deflect the barrage of questions, scrutiny, mickey taking and centimeter by centimeter dismantling of every match we play with a view to finding something to pin on Benitez.

I had to listen to Christian Purslow being grilled by Radio 5 interviewers about the club only for the interviewer to sharply visit the real agenda of "is Rafa's job safe?". He asked, and asked, and asked, and asked again, mainly due to Purslow deflecting yet again and saying "look we need to take one game at a time". Purslow at the end had to say "look, yes I can guarantee that Rafa Benitez will have a job here next season". I was half expecting the interviewer to ask Purslow to "swear on your life, swear on your mam's life...".

They didn't do that, instead they got Purslow off the phone, almost immediately after his guarantee of Rafa's safety at the club and said "well he would say that wouldn't he, don't believe a word of it". Why chuffing ask him in the first place then you morons?

Then we have Ronnie Whelan who now appears to have "Manc" running through his body like a stick of rock, Collymore, who has taken a lot of time out from dogging and domestic violence recently to proclaim himself as the all seeing eye as far as the best interests of the club are concerned in spite of being and sounding like a complete buffoon.

All the above grab the headlines, all of the above keep the threat hanging over Benitez's head in the heads of the public, however support of Benitez seems to go largely unnoticed. I have even seen Richard Keys change the subject completely in an interview when an interviewee has supported Benitez withough even acknowledging the response.

There's nothing I can do about it, which makes me feel frustrated and helpless, but what sickens me more than anything, is that these people couldn't give a toss about who is affected by their poison. They don't care that although Benitez might fall straight into another high profile job if sacked, his daughter will have to most likely move to a new country, learn a new language, have to "fit in" all over again.

I'm desperately not trying to be overdramatic, but this club is responsible for some of my most most cherished memories, Rafa responsible for only the second European Cup I was really old enough to remember and appreciate us winning, for getting us to my first European Cup Final, for giving us the FA Cup in one of the most exciting finals on record, for giving us Fernando Torres, for so nearly ending 20 years without a league title last season, for turning a sows ear into a silk purse albeit with the seams a little frayed.

I can't help feeling that they not only show disrespect to what Rafa has achieved, but theyy show disrespect to the fans who have sacrificed so much in pursuit of the things they hold dear to their heart. They desecrate the memories of those gone during the last 5 years, they mock, scheme, inform rather than reflect public opinion, they hound, harrass, barrack, tease, speculate, lie and scavenge.

Well, although as I said there is nothing I can do to stop this, one thing I can do is continue to support the team that I love, and the manager who is in charge of this club, because he is already responsible for providing me with some of the most amazing adventures in my life, and I owe him for that. Blind loyalty, no, because in spite of everything, there may be a time when enough is enough, but all I hope is that Benitez realises this first, and does the honourable thing.

I find it an abolute disgrace that someone's livelihood can become nothing more than a game-a power struggle: Manager vs Press, but I am thankfully not as ruthless as that.
